Login questions

When I type the following:
"sudo su -"
I get:
-sh: ORACLE_HOME=/export/home/oracle/OraHome1: is not an identifier
$HOST:$TERM:$PWD#
Two questions:
1. I have looked in /etc/profile and /etc/.login and cannot figure out where "ORACLE_HOME" is coming from.
2. The "$HOST:$TERM:$PWD" is supposed to be the values of the prompt. I.e. - "machine_name:vt100:/export/home/username", it looks like this machine is ignoring /etc/profile. On my backup machine where this works correctly, it is in /etc/profile and works. On this machine, I have it set the same as the backup machine's /etc/profile:
PS1='$HOST:$TERM:$PWD> '
export PS1
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Shannon
