ID kernel patch from X_recommended

Does any one have a robust solution of identifying what the kernel patch
revision will be [as displayed in uname -a] when reviewing the
X_recommended patchset/readme prior to install?
There are normally more than one "Kernel Patches" listed in the readme
ETC which makes ID'ing it difficult. Am I missing something obvious
here?
Cheers
