I have just upgraded my only Alpha (old 200/100) with a DAT tape attached
to it from 3.2 to 4.0g.

The tape drive did work with the old system (I wrote the dumps just before
zapping the old system). However now it seems to have problems.

I tried reading a couple of tapes (one is a tar file, and the tape is OK
as tested on a Sun). I tried both with /usr/field/tapex -w -m, and one
with tar. However I get funny behaviours like it the tape were empty or
    with errors.

I also tried various mt -f /dev/nrmt0h commands (rew status offline
online). Sometimes the tape drive says that it is offline, however it
appears to respond to online/offline and rewind commands.

The curious thing is that most of the time the status reply contains the
following string (full message appended at the end)

status 0x3200 Device inoperable (needs initialize)

What does it mean ? How do I "initialize" the unit ?

I thought there was something amiss with the device files (the tape is
alone on a second SCSI bus and is tz12), however it appears that during
the OS installation it was detected correctly, at boot it is seen, the
MAKEDEV.log shows the device files made. And just for sure I removed them
    and did again MAKEDEV tz12.

This is the full "typical" status message (it may also say things like
"becoming ready" or "changed media", but only in one case I got something
which looked as "no errors" (but then tapex gave errors reading the tape).
