Looks like the strings command can be used to gather some information out of the core file. In particular
    'strings core | head'

Now that they mention it, I have used this on a core dump before.

thanks to Alan Rollow and Chris Medaglia.

    Original email below

I had a new experience today. I discovered my / filesystem at 112% of capacity with a core file in the / directory. I did a file on the core file and it came back "incomplete core file" The file was over 3gig in size and was created Saturday afternoon on a developement Tru64 5.1 pk 6 box that really should not have been doing anything during that time.

I ran the sys_check -escalate and passed it up but HP could not find anything wrong. Anyone else have any experience on dealing with an incomplete core file?? I was not even able to determine what utility created it.
