CDE logins failing

            I have a report from a site that, beginning about three weeks ago,
    they are having a problem logging into their systems from the console. They
    put in the username and password and it waits a few seconds and then goes
    back to the login prompt. This is supposedly an intermittent problem.

            This affects at least two different user logins, so it's not
    user-specific. They have four machines of different models and they say
    that this is happening on all four. All are running Tru64 4.0f.

            Their workaround, they say, has been to use an X emulator called PC
    reflections. The problem doesn't occur when logging in this way. They also
    say that they are using four separate monitors and keyboards and not a
    console switch.

            I have checked the files in these two users' home directories to
    verify that nothing has changed.

            I get the feeling that there is something they're not telling me,
    but has anyone seen a bug like this? Got any ideas for questions I could
    ask them to narrow down the problem?
