    Thanks to Michael Acklin, Denise McCracken, Alan Davis, Jim Lola, Dan Price,
    Rezk Mckhael, and Robert M. Lang for their responses. The problem was a /
    character at the top of the /etc/hosts file. I changed this to a # and
    everything worked. Thanks again.

    The specific hosts we are trying to ping are not defined in our DNS but ARE
    defined in /etc/hosts.

            We have a GS160 running 5.1 pk 5 with 5 point patches. We our
    currently experiencing problems with reading the host file. We do a ping
    hostname and we get the following error ping: unknown host hostname. Any
    ideas?
