My original question was related to a system that wasn't willing to boot,
    and
after I got it back online, didn't have /dev/vol etc. I finally fixed this
    last
night at the end of a 14 hour day and don't quite remember exactly which
    steps
I took at all points. I believe my final steps involved setting all of the
partitions on dsk0 to the appropriate type for non-LSM file systems, running
volinstall, volsetup, volencap, and volreconfigure - but don't quote me on
    that.
