I am not sure that there is a complete solution for other managers in
this but I thought I should put out what I have learnt.

You may be able to use dump on an autoloader if the autoloader can
run in a "Sequential" or "automagic" mode. Whereby, if the backup
utility is not volume savvy and you are getting to the end of the tape,
the autoloader will swap to the next tape in sequence. As far as the
utility is concerned nothing has changed. In my case, the HP
SSL1016-LT02, that would seem to be the case. Although I haven't
actually bought the hardware yet so I might be mailin' the group
    again.

    I was also pointed at backupcentral.com (storagemountian.com).
Where I discovered AMANDA. There is a lot of documentation about
AMANDA and from the quick look I had there seems like there is
support for autoloader with a bit of tweaking.

The other point I guess is that although backup S/W is expensive,
even if your a small company, like us, if you deal with a lot of data
you will want the convenience and manageability of a third-party
S/W. I imagine scripting a new routine for a autoloader and managing
the tape rotation is going to be quite a task.

Thanx to Dr Blinn, Martin Anderson, Ian Mcveavy Alan Rollow,
Michael Acklin, Jenny Bulter and Bryan Mills.

    Dp.

    Hi Managers,

Is it possible to use vdump with an autoloader tape backup device? I
see there are options for not ejecting the tape or rewinding the tape
after a dump operation so I am guessing that it is possible. Can
anyone tell me if they are using vdump on with an autoloader and
    what
arguments I should look at? I guess a tape listing after each backup
would also be necessary to determine what data is on what tape?

FYI: I haven't the budget for any third-party backup software.

    Thanx.
    Dp.
