    Hi admins..
    My system:
    Alpha Es40 model with 6 GB RAM, 2x667MHz CPU
    Tru64Unix V5.1 PK4

    Here almost 22:00 and I am trying to connect new ultrium 460 external tape
    drive to my ES40.
    According to manual I should do the following;

    -------------------------------------
    1 Add the following entry to your /dev/ddr.dbase file:
    SCSIDEVICE
    Type = tape
    Name = "HP Ultrium" (6 spaces between "HP" and "Ultrium")

    2 Set the following parameters in the file:
    PARAMETERS:
    MaxTransferSize = 0xffffff
    ReadyTimeSeconds = 0x2d
    InquiryLength = 0x20
    DENSITY:
    DensityNumber = 0
    OneFileMarkOnClose = yes
    DensityCode = 0x00
    Blocking = 0
    CompressionCode = 0x0
    Buffered = 0x1
    DENSITY:
    DensityNumber = 1
    OneFileMarkOnClose = yes
    DensityCode = 0x00
    Blocking = 0
    CompressionCode = 0x1
    Buffered = 0x1

    3 Rebuild the kernel by running /sbin/ddr_config, then reboot the
    system with the tape drive attached. The device files for the Ultrium drive
    will be generated in /dev when you reboot.
    -------------------------------

    I have added the entries in the first 2 steps.. But when I run
     ddr_config -c it gives me ;
    ddr_config: ERROR: the global "SCSI_Density_Table_Size" must be specified

    But very very interestingly, when I run the same command from any other
    machine within a telnet window, it gives
    Invalid Vendor Id (too long) error for the "HP Ultrium" line

    I have checked that, machine consol and remote telnet client use the same
    ddr_config executable...
    I have tried to delete spaces in the "HP Ultrium" line but no
    solution...

    I have read the manual but it does not work.. I have even bought the tape
    drive from HP...
    I am very angry...

    later searching a solution in web; I have found the following;
    -------------------
    HP Ultrium 460

    Ultrium 460 is supported on Tru64 versions 5.1A & B with the inclusion of
    patch BL21. Ultrium 460 is also supported on OpenVMS versions 7.2-2 and
    7.3-1.
    Please note that the tape drive must be running F3AD firmware or later. For
    more information please follow this link:
    http://h18003.www1.hp.com/alphaserver/products/options.html.
    --------------------------------

    Now what is this..? HP contradicts itself...

    Can I use ultrium tape drive without upgrading 5.1B or A..?

    Is there anyone to help me..?

    Now time is 22:11...
