    Not sure how to summarize this since I may have been a bit vague in
    my question. What I was hoping to learn was how consvar worked so
    that I might try to write the same thing for VMS. But as several
    pointed out it is rather platform specific, in some ways. However,
    what makes it plausible is that a lot remains constant in SRM.

    These system routines do appear to be the mechanism to access/modify
    SRM, as may be indicated by running strings on the executable as suggested
    by Alan Rollow.

    Looking in /usr/sys/include/arch/alpha/prom.h there is a further indication
    of SRM and system specific variable (thanks to Alan Davis)
