    Hello Admin Wizards,

thanks to Rainer Wolf and Mike Broderick!

In spite of their efforts we were not able to solve the problem. I ended
up with having the controller and the defective disk replaced AND I had
to reinstall the system - it was not possible to get beyond the single
user mode. Always when trying to mount -t advfs data#usr /usr the
machine halted, created a dump, passed a kill sequence and ended up at
    the srm prompt.

Thus I am convinced now that these machines are not very relieable
anymore even as backup systems of 2nd order.

Thanks again to the list, merry christmas and a happy and healthy new
    year everyone!

    Original statement was:
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of my old backup servers - DEC Alpha 1000/233 with the builtin Raid
shelf (7x DEC 2 GB Diks on a Mylex Controller) has a problem I am unable
    to solve.
The Raid5 set consists of 6 members, disk 7 is a hot spare. One of the
Raid Members (Channel 1 Drive 0) failed, and the machine halted. No
    automatic rebuid.

I started the swxcrmgr from disk and startet the rebuild manually
(worked fine), the defect disk was set to FAIL.

After trying to reboot, the system comes up until the lsm starts - then
it says "DUMP: DRA0 [adress] [adress]" (repeated twice) and goes back to
    the srm prompt afterwards.

Hm. Now I wonder what may have been happening here - is the controller
    defect?

    Anyone an idea?
