    The Answer was twofold:

First, an unsupported video card was shipped with the machine. The SN-PBXGK-AB card I received with the machine is used in an ALPHA 433A Personal Workstation which is designed for NT on Alpha. My workstation is an ALPHA 433AU Personal Workstation for Unix. I installed the correct SN-PBXGB-AA card. Still had problems.

Second, the video card would not function properly in slot 3, a 32 bit full size PCI/ISA combination slot. I moved the card to slot 4, a 64 bit full size PCI/ISA slot and Voila! This video card does not utilize the whole 64 bit card slot. I am not sure why it needed to be installed in that slot.

    The question:

I have an ALPHA PWS 433AU personal workstation running tru64 UNIX v4.0f. I have installed the latest patch kit (DUV40FB22AS0008-20030730) and updated the firmware using the HP alpha systems firmware update v6.4 CD. The video cards are PowerStorm 4D10T Sn-PBXGK-AB. Initially I purchased this machine dual headed however I have since removed a video card to limit the troubleshooting. The following is what I am seeing after much fiddling with the box:

With the VGA enable jumper removed from the video card, the monitor receives no signal from the video card until the Digital login screen magically appears at which point I can login normally and everything seems ok.

With the VGA enable jumper installed on the video card the monitor receives a signal immediately and I see the boot process, however I get the message:
"comet0: Card type 'Digital 4D10T' with 8MB framebuffer memory" "comet0 at pci1000 slot 10" "No Graphics Console Driver Configured" "Generic Console Support Installed: _using VGA" during boot up. After booting up the machine gives the # prompt on a blue screen.

I found the following comet driver entries:

    ./BINARY.comet.mod

    ./include/io/dec/ws/comet.h

    ./BOBN23/comet.h

    ./BOBN23/comet.mod

I believe I should be able to see the boot process and the subsequent Digital Unix Login screen as one seamless process. I know I do on other machines of this type.

Has anyone seen this before and if so how did you fix it?
