Xdec process

      Hello,
       The OS Tru64 V5.1A
       Machine Type: Alphaserver DS20E 833MHz

       To-day I got the following output with top command:
       
       load averages: 1.02, 1.01, 1.01

    317 processes: 2 running, 7 waiting, 20 sleeping, 288 idle
    CPU states: 23.7% user, 0.0% nice, 27.2% system, 49.0% idle
    Memory: Real: 417M/4003M act/tot Virtual: 12288M use/tot Free: 3350M

       The Xdec was taking 99.9% of CPU. There was 256 user process
       were running as given below. The user could not login afterwards.

          I would like to know under what circumstances one get so many process?
    He had 3 sessions as given below. 2 from the console and one from a Mac.
    When I deleted the Xdec process, he lost all his sessions.
