I want to thank Dr. Thomas Blinn and Iain Barker for their responses to my
questions - they helped give me information that lead to some
    experimentation that solved my problem.

It appears the DS20E uses a standard IDE CD-ROM which can be replaced by a
standard IDE DVD-ROM drive. However, the mounting hardware and connector
in the DS20E is not that common. The connector on the back of the drive
is similar to what you might see on a laptop slimline drive.

The answer came when I compared the DS20E CD-ROM to the DVD-ROM drive from
an HP Proliant DL380 G3 server (an Intel based unit). While the two units
had different connectors and mounting hardware, it turns out if you strip
them both of these, the core drives have the same physical form factor.
So, what I did was got a Proliant DVD-ROM drive (HP part #264007-B21 - an
8x/24x DVD-ROM slimline drive), removed the back connection adapter (3
screws) and the mounting tracks (3 or so more screws). I did the same
thing with the DS20E's CD-ROM drive (one screw to remove the mounting
hardware is in a deep recess, so requires a long, fine point phillips
screwdriver) and swapped the mounting hardware between the two. The
DS20E's mounting hardware on the DVD-ROM drive allowed it to mount
natively in the CD-ROM bracket on the DS20E. The operating system (5.1B
PK3, in my case) saw the drive without a problem and allows data to be
    read.

    Tom
