I got a couple of replies about this:

-Tobias Nygren pointed me to a collection of NetBSD patches for screen
    that he uses:
    http://cvsweb.netbsd.org/bsdweb.cgi/pkgsrc/misc/screen/patches/

-Florian Heigl was also nice enough to send me a copy of their screen
    binary.

In the end I believe my screen issue was ncurses related.
