Intel *DID* buy (some of) the software side too - at least a lot of the
compiler team, including myself. This was part of the Alpha deal, but most
people fixated on the hardware side at the time. We're working together with
our HP friends to develop industry-leading compilers and tools for Itanium VMS
(and IA-32/Itanium Windows and Linux, with somewhat less involvement of HP.)
This is the traditional DEC compiler team and things are looking good from
where I sit.

Intel has some very good development tool software. Compilers have been a
weak spot, but we're fixing that. See
