Don't upgrade for JAVA only.
VMS Upgrade is good for many reasons, but JAVA is a bad one.
Don't use a JAVA based mailer only because TCPIP's SMTP is not perfect.
JAVA is such a performance hog and mail is such an important service
in times of virus/worm attacks so that a good/fast mailer is essential.
Use MX (strongly recommended), PMDF or maybe TCPware/Multinet's SMTP
server if TCPIP's is not sufficient (which I still understand).
Upgrade to VMS V7.3-1 (don't forget the ECOs !!) or try E7.3-2 (it is
good enough for me so far) and upgrade to JAVA 1.4.1. I second this. But...
