new message contains wording that clarifies several components of this
strategic initiative.
On September 10, Compaq announced two milestone engineering initiatives with
Microsoft Corporation that are designed to accelerate the move of Windows NT
into the corporate data center and offer customers reduced risk and greater
investment protection as they deploy mission-critical applications within
their enterprises. The two initiatives will deliver:
* Enhanced compatibility and interoperability of the industry's
leading 64-bit UNIX-Compaq's Digital UNIX-with Windows NT Server
* Select capabilities of Compaq's powerful and robust NonStop Kernel,
Digital OpenVMS and Digital UNIX platforms to future 64-bit releases of
Windows NT Server

The first initiative addresses the needs of customers who are
deploying UNIX-based enterprise applications today and who also anticipate
wider use of Windows NT Server over time and IA64 in the future. By making
Digital UNIX the most Windows NT Server friendly UNIX in the industry,
Compaq is providing customers a way to increase the manageability and lower
the cost of implementing a mixed UNIX/NT environment as they deploy
additional applications.
Customers with business-critical applications that demand 64-bit
UNIX functionality can take advantage of Digital UNIX and AlphaServer high
performance, scalability, and reliability capabilities as their business
requirements grow. In addition, this initiative, coupled with Compaq
Services High Availability and Business Critical Support Services, allows
customers to develop optimal strategies for high availability. For ISVs and
channels, the capability to have a high performance UNIX that will be the
most complementary and compatible with Windows NT Server and with IA64 in
the future provides a competitive advantage.
The second initiative will assist customers, ISVs, and channel
partners in accelerating the move of Windows NT into the corporate data
center by bringing some of the capabilities of Compaq's powerful and robust
NonStop Kernel operating system into Windows NT. This initiative includes
technologies previously available only as components of Compaq's Tandem
NonStop Kernel, Digital OpenVMS and Digital UNIX platforms including:
* Clustered Transactional and Recovery Services
* Remote Mirroring technology for improved disaster recovery
* Clustered file system infrastructure and management
* Data and File partitioning infrastructure
* Advanced software tools for high availability systems operation
* Remote system management and system health detection services

With this announcement, Compaq is continuing its tradition of
providing customers with the easiest access to advanced technologies in
response to their needs and in a way that takes advantage of all the
existing strengths. Through these agreements, Compaq customers now have the
confidence of knowing that their system software and storage environments
will be supported by future, 64-bit versions of Windows NT Server. The
agreements also provide customers and channel partners with reduced
complexity, faster change, better management, fuller integration, and easier
development of systems in a heterogeneous environment.
