The EU is about to implement strict recycling rules for computer equipment. It
*should* foster longer life for each PC on the desk, as well as the need for
manufacturers to recycle up to 75% of parts of old PCs.
Also, with current machines now much faster than what is needed on office
desktops, I don't think we will be seeing massive desktop renewal programmes
anytime soon, with companies simply progressively replacing deskops or
upgrading them. This is especially true now that flast screen display has been
widely deployed and those last much longer than CRTs.
The key to success in the wintel industry in the next 10 years will be the
companies that can adapt to slowed growth (or even decrease) in the market,
and redesign their machines to allow for upgradibility in the long terms.
