Have you got a copy of that node's system disc restored to another box and
inadvertently they're on the same network? If so then you'll have a
duplicate MAC address (and DECnet Phase IV address). It's conceivable that
there are odd timing effects within your VLAN (or extended VLAN across
multiple sites) that have somehow allowed them both to come up at the same
time.
