I agree. In the old days, one of the strengths of DEC was that VMS was
VMS, from desktop to datacenter. I was really, really disappointed when
Palmer started saying stuff like "let VMS be the back end for your
Microsoft front end" (whose front end was connected to whose back end
there?). There have usually (always?) been at least "small servers with
a graphics card", which is a workstation by any other name. It would be
nice to see that trend continue, but I still detect the ghost of Bob
Palmer.

As for VMS on Itanium, the selling point has always been that the reason
to do VMS on Itanium was that it is "industry standard" and I believe
Hoff has stated here that, while of course VMS engineering cannot test
and hence cannot support every possible dime-store laptop configuration,
at least no Itanium system will be deliberately crippled (as was the
case with some ALPHAs) so that it can't run VMS. On the other hand, it
would be nice to see VMS officially supported on a reasonably-priced
laptop (by which I mean something cheaper than a used 10-year-old
Tadpole (on which 7.2(-x) is the latest supported version).)
