Amount of free space in a bound volume set?

Does anyone have a code example (DCL or C) for determining
1) Is a disk a bound volume set? and
2) What is the amount of free space on the bound volume set?
I have pieces of the answer ( f$getdvi is used, and one has to do some
looping ) , but was hoping for a clearer example than what I have
on-hand (which is mainly a rough verbal description, and lacks detail).
.
