All that shows is that Kubrick and Clarke were overly optimistic about progress
in space compared to what really happened.
There are some things which materialised, most notably russians and
americans on the same space station with cordial relations between crews.
The movie 2010, produced in the 1980s also has cooperation between
russia and USA, but clearly shows "soviet era" mentality which puts the
movie more "out of date" than the original 2001. (and also has ads for
Pan Am ("the sky is no longer the limit") when Pan Am no longer exists :-)
At the time of 2001's release, showing russians and americans on the
same space station could have been quite a revolutionary concept.
