Re: getting write lock error while formatting tape

I'm going to assume that this is a DLT tape device and that you're using an incompatible DLT drive -- and that you're familiar with the DLT write-lock mechanism. This can be seen with a lower-density drive in a higher-density device, and there are cases such as attempting to use a TK70 drive to write to a tape previously initialized in a TK50. Newer drives can often read older drives, but can't write.

There are lists of read-only and read-write compatibility of various DLT drives and DLT cartridges over in the old Ask The Wizard (ATW) area, too. Tables such as these can help you determine what DLT cartridges will work with what DLT drives, obviously.

I'm unfortunately assuming a whole lot here about this case (not the least of which is that this is DLT), as there is unfortunately rather little information on the configuration here -- one- or two-line questions are often surprisingly difficult for folks to answer. The identification of the tape drive (eg: SHOW DEVICE MKA700: /FULL) and the identity of the particular media or cartridge type in use here would greatly assist with answering this question. Some background on the configuration and the question, in other words.

DLT cartridges have a write-lock slider on the spine, nine-track magtapes have a write ring near the hub, DDS (DLT) cartridges have a write-lock hatch on the spine, TU58 tapes have an L-shaped write-lock, and most other tape media has some sort of physical setting. I'm assuming you've set the write-lock correctly here, however.
