This has happened to be a couple of times:
Alpha DS10L, Radeon 7500 card, VMS 8.3
For whatever reason, I want to restart the dec windows server.
So I go to a VT terminal, login to that node, type @DECW$STARTUP RESTART,
answer "YES" to confirm and it does it trick.
As the server restarts, it displays the "grey" patterned screen, followed
by the login screen. However, the login screen does not fill the whole
display, AND the mouse pointer is displayed but not functional. Keyboard
is functional.
Solution is to kill the server process (and any other decw processies that
might still be around), then get into the console mode, login and then
type the @DECW$STARTUP from the workstation keyboard.
Is the graphics head the console? The V8.3 code had gotten into a bit of a
mess with synchonization in restarting when some unrelated work and bugfixes
were done. I recently fixed a bunch of the problems as I was doing the VGA
console work for Itanium - and it should show up in a graphics update ECO in
the near future.
