Is it?

I've got a 17" LCD and it draws according to my power meter around 50-70 watts when illuminated. OK, less than my CRT, but how much in terms of earth resources did each take to create, never mind the running costs. Its more than I expected and I've no reason to think my meters reads differently for this when other (known) wattages are correctly displayed on my device.

Just in case you're wondering these devices have a series of fluorescent tubes to back light the display, and there is an inverter to raise the voltage to that needed to illuminate the tubes. Low voltage equipment is worse for power conversion.

Very large plasma and LCD screens (yes I know it's different technology) comparatively consume more power than traditional CRTs in practice, why the heck do plasmas have fans in the back? We all know about the multi media centre of the future, but doubling as a room heater?

Save power SWITCH IT OFF, simple!

I thought data centres were supposed to be lights out anyway, surely that includes the monitors?
