fact if true, though I would predict that it is related to factors
other than divine influence.

So if we had 10 earthquakes in 1997, we should expect 5120 this year ?

From this you can say there were 3728 earthquakes of 5.5 magnitude or
greater in 1997. Data up to 2002 has been consolidated and the figures
are as follows:

1997: 3728
1998: 3229
1999: 3813
2000: 8339
2001: 7072
2002: 1275

There's a spike, but if you consider monitoring has improved and look at
the 7.0 or greater the figures are as follows:

1997: 283
1998: 187
1999: 255
2000: 216
2001: 207
2002: 38
