My immediate project is to provide IP connectivity to this network, both for
Telnet and FTP connectivity. Fortunately, Process Software does have TCPWare
for the PDP-11/RSX. Not only will this allow us to remove the DECServers,
and localize the dedicated DECNet ethernet to a DELNI in the computer room,
but it will give us connectivity to our large SAN storage on the corporate
LAN. Using FTP, I can then store the binary RSX data files (which are
currently offline on racks of 9track tapes) online and available to users
from their PCs.
In a previous life I had a few PDP machines that needed to have files
FTP to and from. One neat trick you can do is install TCPWare on the
VMS box, then create a VMS user with a LOGIN.COM that does a SET
DEFAULT pdpname"username password"::. The developer who was doing the
FTP work on the PC side knew nothing about DECNet (or even TCP/IP
dispite what he thought he knew) and I had to explain what was
happening to him half a dozen times, but in the end I just told him to
simply accept the fact that the file was ending up where he needed it
and not try to understand it.
Here is where I need your help. First, I need a network bridge; one that
does AUI to either 10-Base-T, 100-Base-T, or Fiber. The bridge only needs to
bridge IP traffic and not DECNet. Any recommendations for such a bridge wold
be helpful. Since the Dedicated DECNet network only does 10 Megabits, a
10-Base-T connection would be more than sufficient.
I have a customer buying CHARON-VAX with exactly the same problem
right now, he has AUI, Thin-Wire and a bunch of terminal servers. He
is buying TCPWare to go on CHARON-VAX and needs to connect this
original network to the main network. I pointed him at
http://voipstore.atacomm.com/Shops/ViewItem.aspx/27934028032-51509870336.html,
but I have no history with the product.
