We use a couple of 120-gallon propane tanks which get filled about 4x per year (the delivery company tends not to let them fall much below half-full on average), but as a mere heat-pump supplement you could probably get by with a tank or two small enough to toss into the car and take to the local propane filling station to top up (as are commonly used in mobile trailers) - so finding a space for them outside the house should be fairly easy.

Anything larger than the propane tank used on a barbeque is probably
contrary to neighborhood covenants.

Neighborhood? Covenants? When the leaves are off the trees we can see portions of a couple of neighboring houses if we look carefully (their presence - though no real detail - is somewhat easier to detect at night if their lights are on).

I also find it a bit difficult to believe that this would constitute a problem in anything like a majority of existing homes across the country, though would certainly be amenable to corrective references in that area. Even in places that have such covenants prohibiting such visual offenses, tanks of the required size would certainly be easy to camouflage with minor decorative fencing.
