Let me clear this point: I am a little upset that this code was
written, but I am much more upset that it has been in place for

It's a little wasteful to expend effort being irritated with that. You
should see some of the legacy
stuff from Mainframes. Stuff going back to 1964/1965 in some cases, and with
the source lost for a
couple decades or so. ;)

VMS is nice... :)
