Itanium zx2000 video and keyboard/mouse issues

My rx2600 is now fully working. For this, I own a big
Thank You to all of you who helped me with the various issues.
Now it is time to return to my zx2000. Hoff has cleared up
the problem I was having with the DVD booting VMS (see Hoff's
Blog http://64.223.189.234/node/1181 ).
The only outstanding issue I was having was video. I could
boot and run VMS v8.3-1H1, but couldn't run DECwindows.
With a ATI Radeon 7500 (p/n 1028342400) 32MB AGP w/S-Video Low
Profile card, DECwindows starts up, but only displays the cursor
arrow on an otherwise black screen. If I restart DECwindows,
VMS (on the serial console) becomes non-responsive. This card
works OK on a PC, but I don't have another Itanium with an AGP slot.
This particular flavor was probably never tested by HP, but it
was all I had.
With a known-good HP 30-10119-01 (ATI Radeon 7500 64MB PCI)
card, it doesn't even get to the Shell> prompt, but instead
dies in ROM initialization with the messages:
0 0 0x000087 0x000000FFFF06FF83 initialize I/O host bridge
0 0 0x000080 0x0000000000000000 exit I/O discovery
VGA BIOS: 1002 5157 0804
Apparently the boot ROM doesn't like PCI video cards.
The solution, found quite by accident, was when a cow-orker
handed me an ATI Radeon 7000 (note 7000, not 7500) AGP card.
It worked perfectly, and I can log in via DECwindows.
But one more minor problem has cropped up. I don't have an
LK463 VMS-style USB keyboard. But I do have the PS/2 style
LK461. So I bought a Belkin PS/2-to-USB keyboard and mouse
adapter.
During the ROM POST, if the adapter, keyboard, and mouse are
connected, I get a "Unexpected TRAP...no handler installed...!"
error, and the system hangs.
If, however, I leave the adapter disconnected from the zx2000
USP port, VMS boots fine. When DECwindows tries to start,
it notices that the mouse is missing and starts a 13-second
countdown. If I plug the adapter in at that point,
DECwindows starts fine and I can use the keyboard and mouse.
It even works via my KVM switch (Raritan MX48).
A USB keyboard and mouse, directly connected to the zx2000,
cause no problems. With just the adapter connected (no
keyboard or mouse) I get the unexpected trap failure.
This is an annoyance, but I think I can learn to live with
it if another brand of adapter fails to cure the problem.
I have not tried the adapter with my rx2600 yet, but will
tonight.
I hope these notes help someone else who might be struggling
with similar issues.
Alan
