I'm using a NEC LCD2010 on my VS3100-30 SPX. As long as you can match
the monitor's native resolution (GPX cannot but SPX can) and can do
sync on green with a refresh rate within the limits of the monitor,
they'll work.. I don't miss my VR299s that much.
At home I have a VRC20 connected to the PWS. I'd have no qualms
replacing it with another NEC flat panel just to get back some desk
space, but in that case I probably would miss the display quality (the
VRC is a high end Mitsubishi Diamondtron and weighs a ton).
Some of the next gen NECs (2010X and similar, and the aforementioned
1980SX) still provided sync on green, but with VGA and DVI connectors;
mine has BNC and VGA. There are adapter cables available (via ebay,
and others) that will take an existing multiple BNC-end cable and
convert it to a VGA for use with those monitors. The generation after
that dropped SOG though. And now, of course, its getting hard to find
square aspect ratio monitors as all the manufacturers opt for trendy
(and "cheaper" due to lower vertical resolution) widescreens.
You can usually find the specs for major brand monitors online. Look
for synch on green. There is a cable number for the DEC adapter, but
as JF has mentioned, you should be able to make your own as well.
As I recall, on my older VGA-only LCD's, the Samsungs have synch on
green and the Dells do not. YMMV.
