One of the interesting points that came up during the SIG meeting was
the question of whether or not to release version 8.4 earlier than the
delayed release of the new Tukwila processors and do a separate
hardware release for Tukwila later (an 8.4-1H1). HP was still debating
this issue internally, and would like to know how the VMS user
community felt about this idea.

The HP OpenVMS team brought up the issue to get input from customers.

Now there's a surprise - *not*. And of course they were never going to ask
about IPsec were they? 'Cos they already know what the input would be and,
regardless, couldn't give a shit how many customers are waiting for them to
deliver on work they've already been well paid for :-(

So where's Kerry Main and his "Cost of upgrading patches" analysis?
Tell us about testing and recertifying again Grand-dad!

One option which was also discussed is the possibility of releasing ECO
kits on top of vanilla 8.4 to support Tukwila instead of a separate
hardware release 8.4-1H1. This idea seemed to have broad customer support.

Here's another one that'll make Jan-Erik happy. Just release the Alpha 8.4
now and leave Itanium till the hardware arrives. NO additional cost;
everyone's a winner, chickens for dinner?

I'm mean what are the Keith Parrises of this world meant to do
until Tequila arrives?

Those who know me know I'm not interested in any Tequila. :-)

It's the song I can't get out of my head at the moment :-(

Tukwila
will be interesting. But if my DT cluster customers can get 6-member
shadowsets and IP as a Cluster Interconnect without having to wait on
Intel, that's a good thing in my book.

Understandably. Others want Java6, and yet more want/need IPsec! But IPsec
was scheduled for 8.3 and is a little less limited in its application to VMS
customers than DT clusters and 6 Volume Shadow-sets don't you think?

Still, must be nice to be able to cherry-pick whatever work you feel like
doing today! Good to see a part of the old Digital living on :-(

Don't get me wrong, I love disaster-tolerant clusters and it's one of the
few things differentiating VMS in the market place at the moment. More power
to ya! But please tell us why IPsec is "a bad thing in your book"?

what percentage of the VMS installed base do you seriously expect to
upgrade
to the intermediate customer-gouge when they know they'd much rather
wait
for, and combine it with, the performance boost of the new hardware
thanks
very much?

Many of my customers are cautious and wait 6-9 months after a software
release before installing that version (plus the then-accumulated set of
patches). Releasing 8.4 earlier starts that clock sooner, and allows
them the confidence to install 8.4 sooner than they would have been able
to otherwise.

Given the number of patch/kit "recalls" experience by the client-base in
recent years, I'll think you'll find most customers holding back. But just
imagine how much we're all saving by you guys bypassing regression testing!
I guess splitting the kit into 2 or 5 doesn't really incur any additional
cost/overhead at HP/VMS these days?
