when we first got our vax, i started a porting exercise for a rather
more rational line-based editor by an old colleague at the university.
Robin, that wouldn't have been ZED by Phil Hazel by any chance ? One of
my all-time favourite line-mode editors (I'm also an old Phoenix user
from the mid-1970s ;-)
got it in one. (though admittedly i used phoenix rather little, i
knew it was a good 'un, and i already had experience of phil's code
from titan days.)
we bought (rather grotty) compatibles, and worked with them for a long
time. their arrival stopped my porting effort (it was going slowly
anyway, due to workload).
Worth resurrecting the porting effort ?
i dunno. i don't have the stuff phil sent me, any more, and i doubt
phil has either (he stopped working on ibm software way before the
last ibm machine disappeared, some time in the early 90s).
probably a lost cause.
