Why do I have the feeling our ages are actually pretty close to one
another?

Too old to want to write Java for a living, and too young to retire :-)

Damn...... We are the same age!!!!!

Fortunately my niche(s) still have some demand.

Actually, mine might as well. I have just seen a vacancy for a
COBOL programmer. I have always wanted to finish my career the
way I started it and this could be that opportunity. :-)

Oh, and no, I don't think it is on VMS. This particular outfit
(who's three letter name we all recognize) used to be a Unisys
shop. Might still be as I didn't see any mention of CICS which
pretty much eliminates it being another IBM COBOL shop.

I learned RPG-II as my first language. We also had to wire an adding
machine, run a sorter, etc. Cobol followed. PL/I after that. But on the
side my buddies that worked at the school and I were hacking Basic on RSTS.

My first programming job (after having been a 360 operator) was writing
standalone device drivers for a message switching company... from serial
drivers to disk drivers... we used RSX11M to edit and compile and then
loaded the results up for our custom OS.
