GV,GS, Ghostview, GhostScript

About 13 years ago, I upgraded my GV, GS, Ghostview, GhostScript etc.
and all worked fine. I'm pretty sure I set them up together. The world
then changed while I was away. After some inquiries here, I got a new
version of ghostscript and it works fine on ALPHA, displaying PDF files
(not sure if it will display all I need, but at least the most important
ones) and PostScript files (I think all I need it to display). I have
now set things up to use the new ghostscript image.
If I understand things correctly, GV (Ghostview) always uses whatever
image is defined as the symbol GS.
For older stuff, GV works fine (presumably with the new ghostview
image). However, for newer files WHICH THE NEW GHOSTSCRIPT DISPLAYS FINE,
I get errors in GV. However, I like the more comfortable interface with
GV so I would like to use it with the new ghostscript executable.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a newer version of GV (since
1999)? Do I need it?
Does anyone here have ghostscript and ghostview set up so that
reasonably modern PostScript and PDF files can be displayed?
.
