on Intel:
GCC-2.x did create 30% slower code than SunPro C for the code I did test
GCC-3.3 still creates 14% slower code
The code I currently use for testing is a Reed Solomon coder for CD-Data->
CD-Audio sectors.
If you like to repeat the test, get a recent cdrtools source
ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/
compile it and then chdir to libedc_ecc, call make -f speed.mk
then run OBJ/<arch-specific>/edcspeed
