There exists the PV31G-AA controller (54-20772-01) -- which is usually
switchable between what was then known as low-resolution and
high-resolution displays, and the PV31G-AB, which is not switchable.

  The switchable version supports both 1024 x 768 at 72 Hz and 1024 x 864
at 60 Hz. You can guess the resolution supported by the low-res -AB. :-)

There are a couple of other PV31G-* variants around, but those are either
  monochrome or are high-resolution.

What is the part number (and the board revision) found on your particular
LCG graphics controller? 54-20772-01? And do you have the triple-RGB
coax cable connector, or a mini DB15 connector, on the controller?

AFAIK, if you do not have the 54-20772-01, you can't alter the display.
