FYI, there were several variations of these cables available, with
differing connectors at the other ends.

As the WANcontroller is a generic synchronous controller, you should be
able to use it for any physical link protocol, like HDLC, and encapsulate
higher-level protocols as needed, provided software supports it. The
manual states for Ultrix the supported protocols are: X.25, SNA, IP and
DECnet. At least for IP it's quite easy for me to imagine a dual-link
configuration.
I don't know if it would be possible to get at some technical specs for
the board to get it running under the free operating systems -- if so, the
choice of configurations should be quite interesting. Though for
synchronous operation at 64kbps (you can't use both ports of the
WANcontroller for T1/E1 rates at once) the onboard ports of I/O ASIC
DECstations and DEC 3000 systems should suffice.
