    The heat death sited is a specific chip on the board. The one that I
    replaced was noticeably burned, unfortunately, it's on the solder side and
    so you have to remove the board to see it.

    I added a cpu cooler fan, and cut a vent hole above it in the case. I found
    a replacement fan that made more noise but had substantially increased
    airflow above that of the stock fan in the unit and replaced that one as
    well. The system was still alive a year later when I sold it to a collector
    of computers.

    I sanction the vertical deployment and if the stand is missing, make one
    that has some clearance on the bottom, you'll be happy you did.
