Looking for DEC hardware in Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium
and England. Feel free to forward this to anyone who might be
interested.
I will be in England for a few days in August. As I will be out of
contact with cyberspace for almost all of July, I'm posting this now and
of course need feedback by the end of June.
The last two weeks in July I will be in Sweden. Travel plans aren't
firm yet, so if you have something I might want, let me know! I'll be
passing through Denmark on the way to Sweden; again, travel plans are
not yet firm.
For details on England, the Netherlands and Belgium, see the end of this
post.
I'm looking for DEC hardware. I have "enough" in some sense, but I do
need replacement parts for things which fail etc. Of course, I might
decide I need to increase the size of my cluster at some point. In any
case, anything I collect will be used, will be waiting to be used or, if
I really don't need it anymore, will go to a good home.
Here's what I'm looking for:
"Computers": any desktop or "minitower" ALPHA, any desktop VAX or
VAXstation 4000
memory: while it's doubtful that someone would have bare memory, I'm
interested if I have a system it will work in
hard disks: any SBB disk 1GB or larger (RZ26, RZ28, RZ29)---9-GB or
18-GB SBB disks would be especially welcome, "internal" disks 1GB or
larger, especially 9GB
CD-ROM drives
CD-ROM drives and disks should be SCSI, though DSSI might be interesting
if 1 GB or more
colour monitors: especially the somewhat older ones which have BNC
connectors (RBG) for the monitor and three round plugs for the graphics
card (the plugs are smaller than BNC connectors, but much larger than
the pins in other plugs)
cables: SCSI, MMJ serial cables
switches, hubs, repeaters etc
paper documentation: VMS 7.x
Essentially, I am looking for used equipment which is no longer needed
which the owner/maintainer would like to see go to a good home rather
than be scrapped. However, for some things I might be willing to pay a
small fee. I also have an ALPHAstation 2000 and an ALPHAstation 2100.
I'm not sure if I want to keep them (they are nice machines, and I
actually have room for them, but I am concerned about power consumption,
even if they don't consume the presumably maximum values printed on the
housing; if I can ever justify the cost of the power, I can justify the
cost of buying newer, faster, less power-hungry hardware), though if I
do I can use them occasionally (say, as temporary replacements) even if
I don't keep them switched on all the time. However, if someone is
looking for such a machine, I would be willing to trade it for some of
the above stuff and/or sell it for a reasonable fee (to cover my costs
in buying them and/or collecting them).
I can also offer in trade a couple of SCSI CD-ROM drives which only do
2048-byte sectors (i.e. they won't work with VMS).
I will arrive in Kent on Tuesday 10 August, be in the Manchester area on
Wednesday 11 August and in Oxfordshire Thursday--Saturday 12--14 August.
Obviously, I will make the corresponding journeys, but could go as far
out of the way as time permits. I will be heading back Sunday, but will
have very little time, though it might be possible to collect something
early Sunday morning if it is between Oxfordshire and Kent. On the way
there, I will be passing through the Netherlands and the western part of
Belgium, so would be interested in collecting stuff there on Sunday 8
August or possibly Monday 9 August.
Please email me if you can offer me something!
