Oh well, no free upgrades after all. Tried all permutations of CPU,
slotket, single/dual setup (with terminator when single), auto versus
fixed bus speed, plus a variety of multiplier settings (which seem to
be ignored). The bios always reports the system is (line breaks are
    what displayed):

    Digital Personal Workstation 366
    i LX V1.05
    blah blah
    CPU=Pentium Pro 366
      MHz SP

It never recognized the second processor (always showed the 'SP'), and
would always hang immediately after the memory test; sometimes video
would go away, but more often it would just stop with the static
display. There were coolers on the CPUs so they were not overheating.

Given this result, I think its safe to assume the problem is in the
bios or system not recognizing the new CPUs, so there's no point in
trying different slotket hardware (which a friend has offered). I
guess Compaq never bothered upgrading the bios on these even though
the last release still had known problems to be fixed, unless they had
a service fix that was never publically released (and I know Celeron
compatibility would only be a side effect if they had). The most
recent version (1.05) does list one Celeron in the release notes, but
the ones I have are not recognized. Guess this poor thing will never
be more than a poor 333MHz DP linux toy. Thanks for your response
    nonetheless.
