Does the drive with 1012 firmware fail to work with the Pro Workstation XP1000?
Is the 1017 firmware DEC-specific, i.e. does it identify the drive as "DEC"
instead of Toshiba? DEC had some of its OEM drive manufacturers include DEC
firmware on its drives.

If the drive electronics of the failed drive are still functional, you could
swap the old drive's PCB with 1017 firmware onto the replacement drive. I've
done this sort of thing with hard disks, never with CD-ROM drives. Switching
PCBs is potentially a delicate task... Ben Myers
