I've contacted the European Toshiba technical support. A few hours
later, I received an email with the 1017 firmware in attachment. Kudos
to Toshiba for this lightning fast and appropriate answer.

To answer Ben Myers question, I don't know the difference between the
1012 and 1017 firmwares. Both seem to work flawlessly in my XP1000
workstation. My original CD-ROM drive identified itself as Toshiba
XM-6302B; there was no DEC-specific tag (like PCXRN, PBXGI, etc.) so
the difference isn't here. I was only looking for the 1017 firmware
because all the outputs of show config I can find on the web for the
XP1000 workstation have the Toshiba XM-6302B CD-ROM drive with 1017
firmware.

I now have the 1017 and the latest 1021 firmwares available on zip
archives if interested.
