Some of the older drives used in DEC systems had firmware to disguise the
original equipment manufacturer and to make the device conform to DEC's rules
imposed by certain operating systems. For example, the older 12x SCSI CD-ROM
drive identified itself as DEC RRD46 during the SCSI rollcall of devices,
instead of some Toshiba model. Apparently whatever operating system is on your
Compaq Professional Workstation XP1000 is not as rigorous in its acceptance of
devices. The older proprietary DEC operating systems may have been a bit more
skittish regarding firmware and device timings, so DEC imposed rigid quality
control through firmware, an approach that more modern computers could use. I
guess that DEC ordered drives with the 1017 firmware for its XP1000 systems...
