If you would like to try FreeBSD, there is extensive documentation on
installation for alpha, that, and FreeBSD is *extremely* well-documented as
far as free OSes go.

I run FreeBSD and VMS on alpha hardware, I am learning VMS (thanks to
comp.os.vms and fellow co-workers) but I am very comfortable with FreeBSD on
alpha hardware.

If you would like to install FreeBSD on alpha hardware, you just need to
download the ISO for disk1 from one of the ftp mirrors for freebsd.org. (I
personally use ftp5.freebsd.org.) After you burn the ISO, from the SRM all
you need to do is boot the CD and from there you use a ncurses based
installer. Very simple.

I reccommend using 5.4-RELEASE, here are the installation notes:
