Hello.
I have an API CS20 (DEC DS20L) system that currently has 2 failed PSU
fans.
I found a place to source replacement fans, however I've noticed there
is no procedure in the manual on replacing the PSU fans, just the rest
of the fans in the system. I assume the PSU fans are supposed to be
non-user-replaceable. Is it possible to replace the fans, or am I
stuck dishing out the obscene amount of money people are asking for a
replacement PSU ($600).
Thanks,

Dustin,
I generally toss power supplies when the fan fails. But when confronted by an obscene price for a replacement, I break out the soldering iron and electrical tape, open up the power supply and replace the failed fan. The fans are generally either soldered to a circuit board or attached with a proprietary connector, so I clip off the wire leads as close to the failed fan as possible, then splice leads for old and new fans, making sure I get the colors and polarity right. I do this about once every 3-4 years. Most of the time I am dealing with commodity power supplies for personal computers, and new ones are available for short money.
User-replaceable? Well, that's not exactly what DEC had in mind, was it? .... Ben Myers
