SSRT3491 Potential Security Vulnerability in ipcs(1)
 -----------------------------------------------------------------

NOTICE: There are no restrictions for distribution of this
Bulletin provided that it remains complete and intact.

The information in the following Security Bulletin should be
acted upon as soon as possible. Hewlett-Packard Company will
not be liable for any consequences to any customer resulting
from customer's failure to fully implement instructions in this
Security Bulletin as soon as possible.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM: ipcs(1) has a potential buffer overflow.

IMPACT: Potential for local users to get unauthorized access,
          create denial of service (DoS).

PLATFORM: HP9000 Series 700/800 running HP-UX release 11.00 only.

SOLUTION: Until a final patch is available download and install
the fixed version depot from the ftp site.

MANUAL ACTIONS: Yes - NonUpdate
Download and install fixed versions from the
                ftp site, (See below).

AVAILABILITY: This bulletin will be revised when an official
              patch is released.
 -----------------------------------------------------------------
 A. Background
A potential buffer overflow in ipcs(1) has been identified
and now has been fixed. This problem only affects HP-UX
    release 11.00.

NOTE: This problem does not impact HP NonStop Servers,
HP OpenVMS, nor Tru64 UNIX/Trucluster servers.

The SSRT thanks Davide Del Vecchio for reporting this
    potential vulnerability to HP.

 B. Recommended solution
HP has prepared a temporary depot file that can be installed
to fully rectify the problem. This temporary depot file MUST
be removed before the official patch is installed. Failure to
properly remove this could cause corruption of the system and
inadvertently reintroduce the problem at a later time when
    the temporary patch is removed.

Until a final patch is available, download and install the
    UNOF_29043.depot from:

     System: hprc.external.hp.com (192.170.19.51)
     Login: ipcs
     Password: ipcs1

    FTP Access: <ftp://ipcs:ipcs1@hprc.external.hp.com/>
            or: <ftp://ipcs:ipcs1@192.170.19.51/>

Note: There is an ftp defect in IE5 that may result in
a browser hang. To work around this:
      - Select Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced
      - Un-check the option: [ ] Enable folder view for FTP sites.

     The file is: UNOF_29043.depot

     cksum 1511742840 92160 UNOF_29043.depot

If you wish to verify the md5 sums please refer to:

Patch sums and the MD5 program

     MD5 (UNOF_29043) = 8C3F0818C00413ACE87EB5E4B735CAC9

Copy the depot to a protected directory, and launch Software
     Distributor (SD) to install.
