SSRT3627 Potential Sec. Vulnerability in Java VM (J2SE) and
          Java Secure Socket Extension (JSSE)
 -----------------------------------------------------------------

NOTICE: There are no restrictions for distribution of this
Bulletin provided that it remains complete and intact.

The information in the following Security Bulletin should be
acted upon as soon as possible. Hewlett-Packard Company will
not be liable for any consequences to any customer resulting
from customer's failure to fully implement instructions in this

 -----------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM: A vulnerability exists in Java(TM) Secure Socket
Extension(JSSE) where it may be possible under certain
circumstances to gather information about the data
transmitted over a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or a
Transport Layer Security (TLS) channel with CBC
encryption. The issue does not expose private or
          session keys.

A second vulnerability exists where it may be possible
under certain circumstances to extract private keys
from an SSL server. This issue is described in

       http://crypto.stanford.edu/~dabo/abstracts/ssl-timing.html

IMPACT: This bug may introduce potential vulnerabilities into
any program. These defects include the affected
libraries. The resulting vulnerabilities may result
in information leakage and improper code execution.

PLATFORM: Any HP-UX system (B.11.00, B.11.11, B.11.22, B.11.23)
running the supported versions of 1.4.X is affected.
          In addition earlier JVM's (1.2.X, 1.3.X) using
          JSSE 1.0.3_01 is also affected.

SOLUTION: Update to version of Java with the security fixes.
          Note: Java 1.4.0 has been obsoleted by Sun and HP;
                no fix will be provided.

For 1.4.1, manually update to version of Java with the
security fixes: Java 1.4.1.04, or later.

For JSSE 1.0.3_01, you will need to update 1.0.3_02.

MANUAL ACTIONS: Yes - update Java to: 1.4.1.04 or later.

For Java versions (1.2.X, 1.3.X) using JSSE, update
to 1.0.3_02 from the following URL:

          http://java.sun.com/products/jsse/index-103.html

AVAILABILITY: Updated releases are now available at:

 B. Recommended solution

Java SDK and RTE from the website <www.hp.com/go/java>.

     1.4.1.X - 1.4.1.04 or later.

Note: HP-UX versions of Java 1.4.0 is now an obsoleted release.

For Java versions (1.2.X, 1.3.X) using JSSE, update to
    1.0.3_02 from the following URL:
