Indeed, even with +DAportable you cannot combine a 32-bit object and a
64-bit object into the same executable.

I would suggest that even if folks are not planning on running 64-bit
applications just yet, they at least begin _trying_ to compile their
apps 64-bit (+DD64) and get them 64-bit clean. It would probably save
angst and grief in the future when the PHB's decide that they want
everyting 64-bit the following quarter :) (No, this does _NOT_ mean
that support for 32-bit user applications is going-away in HP-UX...)
